World Hepatitis Day 2026: Breaking Down Barriers to Testing and Care

Each year, World Hepatitis Day brings global attention to viral hepatitis and the urgent action needed to prevent liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Under the theme "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down," World Hepatitis Day 2026 calls on governments, healthcare organizations, communities and industry partners to remove the barriers that continue to limit access to hepatitis prevention, testing, treatment and care.

A continuing global health challenge

According to the WHO Global Hepatitis Report 2026, approximately 287 million people were living with chronic HBV or HCV infection in 2024. During the same year, HBV and HCV caused an estimated 1.3 million deaths worldwide, primarily from liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. Together, hepatitis B and C account for more than 95% of deaths related to viral hepatitis.

Despite the availability of effective vaccines, diagnostics and treatments, significant gaps remain. Only 27% of people living with HBV had been diagnosed in 2024, and less than 5% were receiving treatment. Since 2015, only 20% of people eligible for HCV treatment had received it.

Expanding access to reliable testing is therefore essential to finding infections earlier, connecting more people with appropriate care and supporting effective disease management.
